May wildflowers: Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum)

Mayapple grows in large colonies throughout the northeast deciduous forests. The leaves look like umbrellas coming up from the soil. You have to get down to get a close look at the flowers and fruit which are hidden beneath the green.

Despite the suggestive common name of mayapple, named after its fruit resembling an apple that appears in May, this plant is deadly poisonous. Some people eat some parts with a lot of caution though (see here).
